The Gallery of Costume holds the Cunnington’s collection of 18th- to early 20th-century women’s, men’s and children’s dress, and is supported by a significant library and archive of primary source-material that formed the basis of the Cunnington's research. The collection has been much expanded by subsequent curators.

The library and archive contains material from the 18th- to 20th-centuries, including 18,000 books, journals, fashion plates, shop catalogues and documents, and 3,500 photographs. The collection of bound fashion journals is the most comprehensive outside London and includes material not held in national collections.
