Dulwich Picture Gallery houses one of the world's most important collections of European old master paintings of the 1600s and 1700s. The collection is also one of the oldest in Great Britain, substantially put together in the years 1790-5. The paintings are housed in the first purpose-built art gallery in England, designed by Sir John Soane in 1811.
European art was never more rich and diverse than during the period 1600-1750, a time of astonishing artistic individualism and experimental audacity. The result is a dazzling range of styles and different ways of looking at the world. The collection is hung by country and period. The Latins - the Italians, Spanish and French; and the Northern Europeans - Flemish, Dutch and British - are hung in separate areas, allowing for a contrast between thse two European polarities.
