The gallery is based on the collections of paintings, watercolours and drawings made by Samuel Joshua Cooper, who acquired many works during his extensive travels in Europe in the mid-19th century. Artists represented include JMW Turner, John Ruskin, Edward Lear, Atkinson Grimshaw and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Later artists represented include Paul Nash, Christopher Nevinson and Prunella Clough.
