Housed in the former Peak Hydropathic Hotel building, the museum was founded in 1891. It holds collections of regional importance in geology and archaeology. The museum also holds the county's fine art collection and objects of local history. There are three art spaces within the gallery which show a busy programme of exhibitions, mostly of work by contemporary artists.
