Sir John Constable began building this magnificent country house in the mid-16th century. Houses more than 30 rooms of 18th and 19th-century interiors, including a gallery, Great Hall, dining and drawing rooms, bedrooms, chapel, Chinese room and a marvellous Lamp Room.
Filled with pictures and prints, architectural drawings, Chippendale furniture and sporting guns, the house gives visitors a unique insight into the patronage of successive generations of the Constable family. William Constable’s 18th-century ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ is the most important scientific collection surviving in any country house and includes scientific instruments, shells, rocks and minerals, together with extraordinary objects and specimens from around the globe. With financial support from The Art Fund and others it has been possible to repatriate a portrait by George Romney of Mary Macdonell Chichester, Lady Clifford Constable (1789), sold in 1927.
