Housed in an award-winning modern building within Glasgow’s beautiful 360-acre Pollok Country Park, the gallery contains an internationally famous collection of some 8,000 objects donated by shipping magnate Sir William Burrell in 1944. His interests were global, the collection's areas of greatest strength including the arts and crafts of medieval Europe, Oriental art and European paintings. He also bought items from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, and the collection holds everything from 5,000-year-old Chinese bronzes to modern sculpture by Rodin and Epstein. It puts on major exhibitions and family-friendly events throughout the year.
