This is one of the few museums to have been awarded Designated status by the government – the mark of an outstanding museum. The grand Edwardian Baroque building houses superb collections of paintings by Old Masters, British artists (including the Bristol School); Eastern art, ceramics, silverware and glassware; Egyptian mummies and Assyrian reliefs; archaeological artefacts; natural history exhibits; gemstones and minerals; fossils; and a freshwater aquarium. Visitors’ favourites include the famous Ichthyosaur (Sea Dragons) display, and the World Wildlife Gallery, where you can see examples of endangered or extinct animals, including the much-loved Gorilla, Alfred.
