Free entry to all

High in the south transept of the ancient cathedral, and offering spectacular views of its Romanesque architecture, the gallery displays examples of sculpture, woodwork and metalwork from eleven centuries of the cathedral’s history. The collection’s greatest treasure is the late 15th-century sculpture from the Great Screen at Winchester: it was removed by Henry VIII’s commissioners in 1538 and subsequently used as building stone until being recovered in the 19th century. In the cathedral’s 17th-century library, visitors can marvel at the 12th-century Winchester Bible, which took over 20 years for a team of artists to illustrate, and is one of the finest medieval manuscripts in existence.
