Recognised as one of the most important collections of 20th-century British paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture in the country. Many leading British artists are represented, with notable sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, both born within a few miles of the Gallery.

Historical views of Wakefield and Yorkshire are another strength of the collection. Artists, dating from the 18th century onwards, visited Wakefield to record its distinctive skyline as well as its famous buildings like the medieval Chantry Chapel.
