The Trowbridge Museum has a collection of textile machinery that tells the story of cloth-production and why Trowbridge was once known as the ‘Manchester of the West’. Working looms are still operated on most Saturdays. Other displays include a reconstruction of a weaver's cottage complete with handloom, a Victorian schoolroom and a mill owner's office from the 19th-century.
Other items of interest include a display dedicated to Sir Isaac Pitman, born in Trowbridge, who invented shorthand, and a painted silk flag dedicated to Queen Caroline, the maligned wife of the King George IV. A fine 18th-century long-case clock with a unique hawk automaton, manufactured in Trowbridge, reveals the wealth that cloth production brought to the town.
