The Museum of Reading opened in 1883 and it displays art, archaeology, local history, world history and natural history. The collections include over 400,000 objects of regional and national importance. Among the best-known collections are the archaeological finds from the Roman site at Silchester, 20th-century British artworks and the Huntley and Palmers collection, relating to Reading’s famous biscuit company.

The fine art collection includes works by important local artists of national and international standing such as Stanley and Gilbert Spencer, John Piper and Alan Caiger-Smith. There are also pieces by significant artists who have taught in Reading, including Robert Gibbings, Alan Seaby, Jean Spencer and Stephen Buckley. Artists such as Eric Ravillious, David Bomberg, Eric Kennington and Mary Fedden are also represented.
