The collection of contemporary art is one of the best in Scotland and includes work by Christine Borland, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Marcus Taylor, Toby Paterson and Dalziel & Scullion. It also has an impressive collection of 20th-century British art including works by Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson and Francis Bacon as well as works from the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists including Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas.

There is a rich and diverse collection of applied art, craft and design including ceramics, glass, furniture, costumes, textiles and metalwork. The highlights of these are on display in exhibits, which present aspects of lifestyle, decorative techniques, skills and stylistic trends.
