The core of the collection is British 20th-century art. Southampton's collection of the Camden Town Group and related work is one of the finest of its type in the world. All the major Modernist movements are represented, with the Surrealism and St Ives School particularly strong. Contemporary work from the 1970s to the present day is exceptionally well represented, including many Turner Prize winners and short-listers.
