Art Fund Members - reduced exhibition rates
Housed in this 1820s William Burn building since 1984, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art came into existence in 1960, inheriting a small number of 20th-century works from the National Gallery of Scotland. The majority of the collection, however, has been acquired since then and now comprises more than 5,000 items, from paintings, photography and works on paper, to sculpture and video installations.
The first floor is most often used for special exhibitions and smaller, temporary displays. Works from the Gallery's collection, augmented with special loans, are presented on the second floor. The early part of the collection features Matisse and Picasso, amongst others; the post-war collection features art by Bacon, Hockney, Warhol and Freud; with more recent works by artists including Gormley and Hirst. See page 32 for the Dean Gallery which houses the SNGMA's collection of Dada and Surrealist art.
