Founded as Coniston's permanent memorial to its most famous resident, the Ruskin Museum houses an important collection of watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks, crystals and personal possessions of John Ruskin (1819-1900), the artist, critic and radical social thinker; the collections are selected by WG Collingwood, Ruskin’s confidant, assistant and first biographer.
The museum also houses important local history collections relating to Coniston's geology, copper mining, slate quarrying, sheep farming, Langdale linen and Ruskin lace. An extension is planned to house Donald Campbell's Bluebird K7, which crashed at Coniston Water in 1967 in an attempt to break the world water speed record.
