Houses over 800 instruments and accessories dating from the 15th century; most are European but there are also many Asian and African examples. Among the treasures are the earliest surviving stringed keyboard instrument, a significant collection of early guitars, trombones played by Elgar and Holst, and unfamiliar instruments, such as the contrabassophon, division viol, serpent and glass armonica.

The Centre for Performance History possesses a comprehensive collection of images of musicians; there are over 350 original portraits and 10,000 prints and photographs. The centre also contains archives of documents dating from 1736 to the present day, including press cuttings and 600,000 concert programmes.
