Celebrating Orford’s status as a borough from 1193-1886, the collection includes important civic regalia, silverware and robes, dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Through maps, prints and finds, it records Orford’s prominence as a medieval port, the changing shape of its offshore shingle spit (Orfordness) and its lighthouse.
Courtesy of English Heritage, a selection of objects is once again on display in Orford Castle, where the museum began life before the war. It exists now thanks to the sustained efforts of local people, who have built on a nucleus of artefacts from the Marquises of Hertford, former owners of the castle and the neighbouring Sudbourne estate. A virtual museum is also viewable in Orford Church.
