With monastic foundations dating from 1170, Newstead Abbey was turned into a country house in 1540; it is the ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron. There are 30 rooms with a major Byron collection. The gardens and parkland cover more than 40 acres, with paths that meander past lakes, ponds and waterfalls.
