Newhailes House (c 1686) was built for himself by James Smith, the leading Scottish architect of his time. It houses an intact set of early 18th-century Rococo interiors and fine collections of portrait and furniture. The house is set within an 18th-century designed landscape of woodland walks, open parkland, and remains of water gardens.
