Opened in 1849, the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery displays collections of natural history, ancient Egypt, art and geology, including the famous Rutland dinosaur. The museum also displays toys, masks, ceramics, textiles, wood and metalwork. The new World Arts gallery combines objects from Europe, Asia and Africa in new ways that celebrate beauty, creativity and innovation.

The main gallery includes 16th- to 21st-century art including works by Bacon, Degas, Spencer and Moore, whilst upstairs changing temporary exhibitions are shown alongside Leicester's acclaimed collection of German Expressionist art. Begun in 1944, this includes works by Kirchner, Heckel, Kandinsky and the striking 'Red Woman' by Franz Marc.
