The National Portrait Gallery houses the world’s largest collection of its type, ranging from the late Middle Ages to the present day. It focuses on the people who have shaped British history and culture, from kings and queens to musicians and film stars. Artists featured range from Holbein to Hockney, and the collection covers photography and video as well as more traditional media. The programme of major exhibitions and special displays range in theme from the work of the world’s greatest artists and photographers to prestigious competitions to find the best new talent in portraiture.
