The National Library of Scotland is the world's leading centre for the study of Scotland and the Scots across the globe. Our collection of over 14 million items encompasses books, maps, manuscripts, films, photographs, newspapers and journals, music and ephemera covering Scottish literature, history, science and culture, and virtually every other subject imaginable.

The permanent exhibition of the John Murray Archive brings to life the work and figures who helped shape the modern world. The influential firm of John Murray published Lord Byron, Jane Austen, Charles Darwin, David Livingstone and Benjamin Disraeli, and many other leading writers, explorers, scientists, politicians and thinkers of the 18th and 19th centuries.

A year-round programme of free exhibitions, events and learning activities help interpret recorded Scottish culture, as found in our collections for a wide and varied audience.
