Manchester Art Gallery houses a collection of fine and decorative art. Highlights include a world-renowned collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and works by Gainsborough, Stubbs, Turner and Lucien Freud. English and Continental decorative arts, including ceramics, glass, metalwork and furniture are housed in a craft and design gallery.

The programme of changing exhibitions has a regional and national profile; in 2008 there is an exhibition of contemporary art from Asia, as part of the Asia Trienniale Manchester.
