Manchester Art Gallery houses the city's art collection. Extended in 2002, the gallery now occupies three buildings, including a Grade 1 listed structure designed by Sir Charles Barry in 1824. Highlights of the collection include world-renowned Pre-Raphaelite paintings, works by Gainsborough, Stubbs, Turner and Lucian Freud, and a significant group of works by Adolphe Vallette, a French Impressionist who lived in Manchester and directly influenced Lowry, one of his pupils. English and Continental decorative arts, including ceramics, glass, metalwork and furniture are also housed in a craft and design gallery.
