Reopening in Autumn 2009. The Ashmolean, Britain's first public museum, houses Oxford University's prinipal collection of art and artefacts, ranging from ancient Egypt to 20th-century Europe. The holdings include paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, coins and Eastern arts. A major development scheme is currently transforming the museum to create more display space, a dedicated education centre and state of the art conservation studios. The Greek and Roman collections that are currently split between two separate sites will be integrated, and a series of new teaching rooms and study centres will be provided.
