The Herbert’s original objective was to collect art relating to British life and landscape. However, its range has subsequently expanded greatly and it now includes abstract art as well as Eastern European and far Eastern works. In 1963 the policy was altered to include abstract art, and recently The Herbert opened new galleries for the permanent display of its painting and sculpture collections; highlights include Giordano’s enormous painting Bacchus and Ariadne, Lawrence’s portrait of George III, and work by Turner, Hepworth, Sutherland, Bomberg and Lowry.
