Hastings has attracted artists since the 18th century. Paintings in the Museum by Farington, Hearne, Prout and Turner chronicle its status from fishing village to fashionable resort. 20th-century artists include Bratby, Cummins and Laetitia Yhap.

The Ceramics collection specializes in Sussex pottery, with its slip-filled printers’ type and star patterns, as well as green hop ware made at Rye and 20th-century pieces by the Cole brothers. Hastings's links with the conservationist Grey Owl are commemorated in galleries devoted to plains, woodland and Arctic tribes of North America. These include Inuit carvings, fine beadwork and a magnificent eagle feather headdress worn by Iron Tail (Cinte Maza).
