Overview

Opened in 1927, the award-winning Ferens Art Gallery boasts a magnificent and diverse collection, ranging from the medieval period and European Old Masters to contemporary video portraits.

Permanent collections

Aside from regular exhibitions such as ARTIST ROOMS on tour with the Art Fund, the gallery is also home to a broad permanent collection with important works by Canaletto, Helen Chadwick, Frans Hals, Henry Moore and Stanley Spencer. Contemporary artists featured include Ian Breakwell, Nan Goldin, David Hockney, Craigie Horsfield, Gavin Turk, Mark Wallinger and Gillian Wearing.

Art Funded works

Jacob van Ruisdael's A Wooded Landscape with a Cornfield was purchased to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of The Ferens Art Gallery which specialises in Netherlandish painting but had no major 17th century Dutch landscape before this acquisition.

Study of Stanley Spencer by Richard Carline is a preparatory study for the completed painting 'Gathering on the Terrace', which was acquired by Ferens Art Gallery with the help of a grant from the Art Fund in 1995. Stanley Spencer lodged with the Carline family and in 1925 he married Hilda Carline, Richard's sister.

Visitor information

The Ferens runs a children’s gallery as part of a lively education and events programme that includes tours, talks and art workshops.
