The museum is home to a collection of paintings and drawings by 19th- and 20th-century artists who have suffered mental health problems (including Richard Dadd, Jonathan Martin, William Kurelek and Louis Wain), together with contemporary works. Other items of historic significance on display include the sculptures of Raving and Melancholy Madness formerly displayed above the gates of the 17th-century ‘Bedlam’. The museum also cares for the archives of the Bethlem and Maudsley hospitals.
