Description:
This portrait is a preparatory study for the completed painting 'Gathering on the Terrace', which was acquired by Ferens Art Gallery with the help of a grant from The Art Fund in 1995. Stanley Spencer lodged with the Carline family and in 1925 he married Hilda Carline, Richard's sister. The study and the completed painting show Spencer's artistic influence on Carline and the figures and tonality are close in style to his own works of the 1910s and 1920s.
