Description:
A Chinese 'export' or 'trade' painting in its original Chinese carved and gilded frame, by an unknown artist. Pictures were commissioned from Cantonese artists by foreign merchants, and were usually scenes of China itself; the commission of an image of a private residence in England is very rare. Oriel Lodge is Cheltenham's earliest Gothic Revival house and was built by Captain Charles Timmins (1773-1838). He almost certainly commissioned the work.
