Marion Collier (1859 - 1887)

National Portrait Gallery

circa 1882-1883

The portrait depicts the late Victorian artist John Collier in the act of painting a portrait of his first wife, Marion Collier which closely resembles a portrait of Marion already in the collection. This is a highly unusual experiment in portraiture as Marion is painting a portrait of her husband painting a portrait of her. It evokes the domestic ambience of a couple who were part of a distinctive artistic and intellectual milieu of the period.
