Description:
This work is Shonibare's response to the Bicentenary of the Parliamentary Abolition of the Slave Trade in 2007. The Wanderer was the last slave ship to import slaves from Africa to the United States in 1858 despite the outlawing of importation many years before. The 'African' batik fabric depicts slippers of varying sizes scattered across the sails which seem to allude to the way enslaved families were brutally separated from each other.
