James II was defeated by William III at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The front of the medal shows an armoured draped bust of William. On the reverse is a depiction of William III on horseback with the battle in the background which later became the iconic image of William and his victory at the Boyne. An inscription reads: APPARUIT ET DISSIPAVIT (HE APPEARED AND DISPERSED THEM) LIBERATAT HIBERNIA MDCLXXXX (IRELAND FREED 1690). Purchased by the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
