Elizabeth Gunning (1733 - 90) was a renowned beauty and married the 6th Duke of Hamilton after a whirlwind romance in 1752. She was painted by other artists including Ramsay and Reynolds, but this portrait is the defining image of her and became well known through an engraving published in 1753. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
