This sampler is both a fine example of late 18th century needlework and one of the earliest known depictions of Wesley's Chapel, the London base of the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. There are few surviving 18th-century depictions of the chapel, making it a rare and important object. Skillfully worked, it includes a variety of motifs and text including Christian verses and a dedication reading: A south west view of Revd Mr John Wesley's new chapel City Road London, done by Elizabeth Ryalls in the 12th year of her age December 19 1798.
