Description:
This double portrait depicts two women attending Sunday Mass at Whitsun and was produced during or shortly after David Jones second illness. The artist is concerned to capture the moment of Pentecost, with the dove resting between the women's head. G M Hopkins was a Jesuit Priest and a talented writer and poet. It is clear that Jones idenitified with the priest in a very personal way and this work possesses and encapsulates Hopkins beliefs and philosophy.
