Edward Lear (1812 - 1888)

Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum

1837

The three drawings represent the final stage of Lear's Lake District work which he worked on after he had left the Lakes and shortly before his departure for the Continent. Lear creates precise details and varied textures largely from the use of the pencil and touches of white heightening. In the small view from Furness, for example, he is able to create the impression of distant hills with no more than a few waving lines.
