John Buckler (1770 - 1851)

Buckinghamshire County Museum

circa 1810

Stowe House was built in 1676 and extensively remodelled by Earl Temple when he inherited the property in 1749. The South Front was remodelled in the 1770s. Buckler illustrates the development of the picturesque, the idea that the country house should be seen as part of its setting within its grounds. This is emphasised by giving prominence to the tree in the right foreground, which actually obscures part of the house.
