Museum Nan Eilean

1798

This work is one of the two earliest known paintings of Stornoway. The companion piece is in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. It provides an accurate and invaluable topographic record of the town at a time when Stornoway was beginning to expand beyond its narrow medieval focus. It includes buildings which no longer survive such as the ruined castle of the Macleods and the shooting lodge of their successors, the Mackenzies.
