Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867 - 1956)

Falmouth Art Gallery

1888

This work was painted during the artist's visit to Cornwall in 1888 and the style shows the strong influence of the Newlyn School and the use of their particular method of painting known as the 'square brush technique'. This allowed the artist to be less distracted by detail and added vitality to the work. The treatment of the sea in this work is a particularly masterly use of the technique.
