Sylvia Plath (1932 - 1963)

National Portrait Gallery

circa 1957

Plath made this intimate and evocative portrait within two years of her marriage to Hughes. It appears that Hughes preserved this drawing, having destroyed other personal papers belonging to the marriage. It therefore stands as a unique image not only of a major poet, but also as a vital document of a much debated important literary relationship.
