This work depicts shrimping vessels working from Leigh-on-Sea in the mid 19th century. By the 1870s, shrimping was the principal fishery of Leigh-on-Sea and employed over 170 vessels, some going as far as France, Belgium and the Channel Islands for their catch. In the background are several naval ships which would have been under the command of the Naval Yard at Sheerness.
