Description:
This is an election jug made in favour of William Hill who successfully won the 1796 Parliamentary Election in Shrewsbury. This was a closely fought election campaign between William and his brother John Hill and was dubbed a 'family contest ... sprung from a pique' and the brothers attempted to buy votes with ale, food and more. Shrewsbury acquired the election jug for John Hill with the help of The Art Fund in 1965.
