Peter Lanyon (1918 - 1964)

National Museum Cardiff

1961

This landscape is inspired by a beach in St Ives, Lanyon's birthplace. Here he tackles concerns with weather; the shoreline as female; motion of the body; motion of the viewer; sensuality and intimacy. Lanyon explained, 'there is no specific reference to any part of the body but there is the sort of rolling over motion that one might expect to see on a beach'.
