Fragments owned by Lord Elgin; by descent; John Hewett, 1950s; Hon. Robert Erskine; Sotheby's, 1994 (fragment only), remainder purchased privately. Fragment ex Broomhall - Classical Antiquities, 1986. Previously on loan to the British Museum.

Description:
The geometric pottery amphora is made up from 15 fragments which have recently been restored. The surface is covered with an intricate web of half-tone decoration. An elaborate 'tapestry' pattern fills the widest zone around the middle, a chequerboard motif decorates the shoulder and an elongated double meander emphasises the elegant neck. A frieze of water birds fills the narrow zone below the rim.
