Josef Herman (1911 - 2000)

Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery

1949

Ystradgynlais is an old iron working and coal mining town in the south of Brecknockshire where Herman lived between 1944 and 1955. He stayed in Pen-y-bont Inn for the first four years and was very happy there. This work depicts the inn as the sun is setting. Tawe bridge is painted bright red, which could reflect Herman's fascination in the image of the miners crossing it against a glowing sky which inspired many of his works.
