Description:
The Volunteer movement began in 1778, initially as a largely Protestant movement, in response to the threat of French invasion whilst British forces were occupied in the American Civil War. It subsequently developed a more radical stance, for example, campaigning for free trade, parliamentary reform and Catholic emancipation. This banner was made for the battalion of the Barony of Strabane whose members were particularly influential in the broader Volunteer movement.
