John Opie (1761 - 1807)

Opie was the son of a mine carpenter from the tin-mining district in Cornwall. He was hailed as 'the Cornish Wonder' when his paintings were exhibited in London in the 1780s. This work is possibly one of five works exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1782.
