Description:
The jacket is made from fustian, a woven cloth of cotton and linen and is embroidered in silver thread and spangles. The embroidery is worked in chain stitch outlining an almost abstract pattern of leaf and flower shapes which was highly unusual in the 17th century. Naturalist renditions of garden flowers, birds and animals were far more common. It was also unusual at this time to use precious metal embroidery on fustian, a rather hardwearing and utilitarian fabric.
