This photograph was taken as part of a series depicting life in the heavily bombed Elephant and Castle district of London during the Second World War commissioned by the Picture Post magazine. The complete caption read 'A Ghost Strayed from Old Greece: Corinthian pillars in a Hogarthian slum. In the burnt out Metropolitan Tabernacle, Victorian preacher Spurgeon raised his warning voice on Thursdays and Sundays.'
